Videos capture Mexican Navy training ship Cuauhtémoc crashing into Brooklyn Bridge
In an unusual and startling incident, a traditional Mexican sailing vessel struck the Brooklyn Bridge, causing minor damage but no serious injuries. The collision, which occurred on 18 may 2025, left New Yorkers bewildered as the historic-style ship became entangled in the bridge’s infrastructure before being safely secured.
The Incident
The vessel, identified as the Cuauhtémoc, was a replica of a 19th-century Mexican tall ship used for cultural and training purposes. According to witnesses, the ship was caught in strong currents and gusty winds while navigating the East River, causing it to lose control and drift toward the bridge.
The mast and rigging became tangled in the bridge’s beams, bringing the ship to an abrupt halt. The impact did not cause structural damage to the bridge, but debris from the ship’s sails and rigging fell onto the roadway, leading to temporary traffic disruptions.
Response and Rescue
The U.S. Coast Guard and NYPD Harbor Unit quickly responded, securing the ship and ensuring no one was injured. The crew—composed of trainees and experienced sailors—2 sailors lost their life. Fortunately, no vehicles or pedestrians were harmed, though some onlookers captured dramatic footage of the ship lodged against the bridge.
Investigation Underway
Maritime authorities are investigating how the sailing vessel, which relied primarily on wind power, ended up in such a precarious situation. Early reports suggest a combination of navigational error and sudden weather changes may have been factors.
